Summer marks the arrival of coastal Alaska’s biggest residents: humpback whales, hungry after 8 months away from these waters with no food. It remains nature’s eternal irony that one of the ocean’s biggest dwellers relies on the smallest for sustenance, including microscopic plankton, schools of fish, and tiny crustaceans known as krill. A different whale species that live in these waters, orcas, hunt together as part of a pod. But these toothed killers aren’t content with small fish--they’re after bigger prey, such as otters and seals.
