As the Alaskan tide advances and retreats, so do the fortunes of the animals that live in its wake. First, the saltwater floods flow outward, trapping fish, urchins, and clams in small tidal pools--easy pickings for hungry predators such as shorebirds, sea otters and minks. The feast is lavish, but speed is the name of the game. If the tide turns before they’re finished, it’ll be the predators who are swept away to a watery grave. The tide isn’t just a provider; it’s also an architect, reshaping miles of new coastline, with every turn.
